How to Write an Effective Cover Letter: Tips and Structure

A cover letter—also known as an application letter—is your personal introduction to a potential employer. 2. Salutation

Example: Dear Mr. Sharma, or Dear Hiring Manager, if you don’t know the name.

3. Introduction

Example:

4. Body (1–2 paragraphs)

Here’s where you match your qualifications to the job:

  • Share achievements or projects related to the role
  • Emphasize how your background aligns with the company’s goals

5. Closing Paragraph

Reaffirm your interest and politely suggest a follow-up. Mention that your CV is attached.

Example:

I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring my skills to your team and contribute to XYZ Ltd.’s marketing objectives. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I can support your goals in more detail. Thank you for considering my application.

6. Sign-Off

Use a professional closing, such as:

  • Sincerely
  • Yours faithfully (if you used “Dear Sir/Madam”)
  • Best regards

Then sign your full name.
